Beyond the "Veil"By Amanda Well, as an avid fan of J.K. Rowling's works and as a writer myself I'd like to start off by saying it's no surprise to me that J.K. Rowling still had lots more to say on the subject of background when it comes to her "not so main" characters. If you've been to her website and you've already been to the Extras Section then you know the gist of this column. So, for now I'm just going to elaborate one of my favorite topics, The Weasley Family. The Weasley family, as far as I can tell, goes way back down the ages. Probably back to before people like Voldemort were in power. As everyone knows, the Weasley's are blood relations to the Blacks. This is where I begin my speculating. The Blacks are an old family. They obviously go way back. As do many other "pure blood" families (eg. The Malfoys) in the Harry Potter series. One other term that came up in this search was the phrase "blood traitor" now as far as I can tell J.K. Rowling came up with this term for good reason. Now as far as I can tell "blood traitor" meaning those who are pure blood and are married into muggle or muggleborn relationships is probably just as bad as "mud bood" or any other slang in the Harry Potter series is just like the others. Nothing new here. A pattern I've noticed is that each one of these words has to do with lineage and blood ties. Harry knows very little about his own family. What's in store for him and what new things will he learn about his late parents? Only time and two more books will tell. I'd like to conclude this editorial by saying that obviously, besides birth dates and all the facts jkrowling.com has about The Weasleys, we still have a great deal to learn about the Weasleys and all the other HP characters... Until then I bid you good day!
