Lemony Snicket's
A Series of Unfortunate Events
A Review by Daniel
Jim Carrey? For Count Olaf? I was not so sure about this...
Don't get me wrong, Jim Carrey is a great actor, but as Count Olaf? Well as it
turned out I worried worried for nothing! Carrey does an excellent job as Count
Olaf, a distant relative of the Baudelaire orphans who is determined to get his
hands on the Baudelaire family fortune even if it means killing one or more of
the children.
For those of you not familiar with the Series of Unfortunate
Events books the movie is based on that series written by Lemony Snicket. The
books tell a very unfortunate story about three very unlucky children whose
parents die in a tragic fire. The three children, Violet (the oldest), Klaus,
and Sunny (the youngest) are then shipped from place to place as each of there
new homes doesn't work out; partly because of their rotten luck and partly
because of the efforts of Count Olaf.
This movie is a combination of the first three books in the
series: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, and The Wide
Window. This was another factor I was unsure about. How were they going to
successfully combine 3 books into a movie of good quality? And once again I
worried for no reason. Overall the film is very good, true the books (although
very summarized of course), and very unenjoyable (only readers of the
books will get that last bit).
