The Complete Adventures and Memoirs of
Sherlock Holmes
A Review by Ana
This book is a classic, and I'm sure many of you have read it. If you
haven't, you've missed out on a lot. These short stories about the detective
Sherlock Holmes will amaze and capture anyone. His method of deduction is so
simple; you think you can do it. But when you try, you cannot. The way Holmes
solves his mysteries is a pleasure to read, while everybody thinks about the
same theories, Holmes bravely investigates, and finds the answer because he is
open to ideas. A famous quote from him: "It is a capital mistake to
theorize before one has data. Therefore, one begins to twist facts to suit
theories, instead of twisting theories to suit facts." That is quite true,
and how Holmes uses it to solve the most extraordinary cases will amaze you. You
will try to guess the answer to the most interesting mysteries, yet Holmes will
be there before you. These stories of Holmes amazed readers when they were
published in a magazine in the 1890s, and they are still adored by many.
They are written in old and complicated English, however. Or so it seems.
When I read the first story, I was like "gosh this is too
complicated." I was ten. Now, at 12, I read these myself with ease and
loved them. They are so wonderful, Holmes's wit and humor, and the suspense and
mystery will make readers long for more. The complicated plots complicate the
stories, but at the end, all is solved and readers can rejoice along with
Holmes.
